The dbx 202 Black Can was the most popular and well regarded Voltage Controlled Amplifier which can be still found in the Vintage Recording Consoles.
Those first VCA’s were assembled with hand-picked and matched in the oven discrete transistors. First VCA’s were quite noisy and generated significant distortions.
The Classic VCA Compressor Colour Module is made with THAT Corp. Analogue Engine which evolved from the original dbx 202 design.
After years of development THAT engineers squeezed the first VCA’s into the IC format, improving the THD and noise performance in the process.
The THAT Analogue Engines share the same core design DNA as their discrete transistor – potted in the box – VCA predecessor.
The Classic VCA Compressor Colour Module was designed for professional studio use.
Although shrunk to the size of the Colour Module, The Classic VCA Compressor module provides essential compressor features.
The user has access to Threshold, Ratio and the Gain Make-up settings which allow to control the performance of the compressor module.
The Classic VCA Compressor has the Auto-Attack feature which changes with the Ratio. This option can be enabled with the jumper.
The signal recovery is provided by the Analogue Engine and changes slightly with the input signal.
The sophisticated THAT Corp. Analogue Engine design ensures the low THD level and noiseless performance of the Classic VCA Compressor Colour Module.
